Second Time -- Citizens Medical Center named one of the Nation's 100 Top Hospitals.

The Thomson 100 Top Hospitals award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, according to bed size, teaching status, and residency program involvement. Within the comparison group, each hospital was ranked on the basis of its performance on key performance measures, then summed each hospital’s performance-measure ranking to arrive at a total ranking for each hospital.

The Performance Measures are:
Risk-Adjusted Mortality Index
Risk-Adjusted Complications Index
Risk-Adjusted Patient Safety Index
Core Measures Score (total score for AMI, CHF, and Pneumonia)
Severity-Adjusted Average Length of Stay
Expense per Adjusted Discharge, Case Mix, and Wage Adjusted
Profitability (Operating Profit Margin)
Cash to Total Debt Ratio
Growth in Patient Volume (percent inpatient, emergency, outpatient surgery, and major outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic)

“This award is difficult to achieve for two reasons”, states Cherie Brzozowski, Quality Management Director at Citizens Medical Center. “One, it only uses statistical information to select the top performers from approximately 3,000 hospitals across the country and, two, the measures change each year based on new and higher standards of care”. To win, a hospital must keep up with the new standards and develop new techniques to achieve better performance as well as perform well across many measures, not just one, says Brzozowski.

David P. Brown, says “I am extremely pleased to accept this award the second time on behalf of our many caregivers and the staff that supports them in the daily care of our many patients. The success of this hospital is recognized by all of our patients and their loved ones and is made possible by our caregivers and also by the competency and hard work of our Medical Staff, and the support of our community. Doesn’t everybody know this about Citizens Medical Center?”
