HealthWISE is a community education and corporate health service of Citizens Medical Center. Through educational programs and preventive screenings, HealthWISE helps build healthy individuals, healthy families, healthy employees, and, thus, a healthy community.

HealthWISE community education programs include: American Heart Association Adult/Child and Infant CPR, American Heart Association Basic and Pediatric First Aid, SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome Class, Safe Sitter Babysitting Class, Mended Hearts - Cardiac Support Group, Sweet Talkers Lunch Bunch - Diabetes Support Group, Diabetes Self-Management Class, Be WISE with HealthWISE quarterly speaker series, and HealthWISE Moments.

HealthWISE Corporate Services
HealthWISE also offers comprehensive corporate health programs. Each business is different so programs are designed to meet your specific needs. HealthWISE corporate services include: Pre-employment and annual physicals and screenings (basic, DOT, job-specific), Post-accident and random drug and alcohol screening, Private safety classes - CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens, Citizens HealthPlex Corporate Partnerships, Corporate Health Fairs, and Wellness Programs.

Safe Sitter Class, $40
Central Classoom
 
Safe Sitter is a medically accurate program that teaches boys and girls, ages 11-13, how to handle emergencies when caring for children. This class teaches safe and nuturing childcare techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies. The fee is $40 and includes the Safe Sitter Manual, Safe Sitter Kit, Completion Card, and Completion Certificate. Please contact HealthWISE at 572-WISE to register or for more information.

Support Groups and Classes

Cardiac Education
These classes offer useful information on low-fat, low cholesterol eating, cardiac medication, cardiac risk factor modification, and exercise to help you prevent or manage coronary artery disease. Cardiac classes are available in an interactive format at hospitals in Port Lavaca, Hallettsville, Cuero, and Refugio. Call the Education Department at 572-5064 for more information on interactive cardiac education.

Mended Hearts Support Group
The support group is for those who have had heart surgery and their spouses. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month at the Citizens HealthPlex from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Please call to register and to order the optional lunch for a minimal fee of $5 per person. Diabetes Education
Diabetes Education classes focus on giving the participants information about managing their diabetes through meal planning, exercise, blood glucose monitoring, and medication, if needed. These classes, offered monthly, are taught by a Registered Dietician and a Diabetes Education RN. Please contact the Education Department at 572-5064 for more information.

PLEASE NOTE: Citizens Medical Center has adjusted the format and fee of its diabetes education program. The program will continue to follow the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association, but in a more abbreviated format. You must have a physician’s referral to attend.
