Citizens’ cancer program includes surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other specialists. There is a multidisciplinary team approach to planning, providing, and evaluating the care of patients with cancer, which results in improved patient care. The oncology floor at Citizens Medical Center has 27 rooms for inpatient medical and surgical care, and an outpatient unit where chemotherapy is administered by oncology certified nurses. The Kathryn O’Connor Regional Cancer Center provides cutting edge conformal radiation therapy through 3-D computerized CT guided simulation and planning, and utilizes Varian’s Clinac 21EX and 2100C dual energy linear accelerators, Millennium multi-leaf collimator, Protal Vision aSi imaging system, etc., allowing board certified radiation oncologists to provide high precision dose sculpting for advanced tumor control. Citizens Diagnostic Imaging Center provides Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT) Scans, ACR accredited mammography with stereotactic capability, advanced Ultrasonography, Nuclear Medicine with spect tomography, and PET/CT, for early detection and assessment of extent of disease. Tumor Board meetings, held twice monthly, provide the ideal forum for encouraging multidisciplinary discussion and recommendations for optimal patient care. Breast Cancer Treatment Planning Conferences, also held twice monthly, provide for multidisciplinary team treatment planning and coordination of care for newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer. Cancer conferences are designated as Category I CME (AMA/PRA) and AAFP prescribed credit. A cancer survivorship program at Citizens HealthPlex, “Healing Through Movement”, is for people in all phases of cancer recovery. The program offers cancer survivors the means to take action toward recovery and wellness. Through specially designed fitness programs, relaxation classes, and educational sessions, individuals can actively pursue ways to enhance their fitness, quality of life, and personal healing and recovery. The Cancer Registry serves as the database for the cancer program, collecting information on the types of cancer in the patients we serve, including extent of disease, treatment, and outcome. Registry data are used to help analyze our progress in managing cancer and improving quality of life and survival rates. The team approach to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer includes the best available technology, medical expertise, and support services provided with a personal touch at Citizens Medical Center.
